Christina writes in in a bit of a panic to ask for some help:
I am looking to come off ciggies and go onto tabacco but don’t know which one to buy. I currently smoke Silk Cut Purple and was wondering if there are any mild tabaccos out there.
If you could recommend one I would very much appreciate it.
What does the collective wisdom of Tobacco Reviews have to say to her?

Orlik Golden Sliced is a good one but does have one drawback, unless smoked slowly and packed properly, it will bite back and burn hot, two tobaccos I have come across recently may fit the bill, Wessex Gold Virginia Flake is a very good one, but only available in the USA, and by your description of silk cut, you are English, Wessex is available through smokingpipes.com, customs and vat will apply on the tobacco reaching these shores. Another excellent tobacco which could be used as an all day smoke and is mild enough is a German offering which goes under the name of Richmond Navy Cut, don’t be put off by the name, this is not strong heavy tobacco by any means, it is cool smooth and a delight to smoke (I’ve just orderd 10 tins) this is available from http://www.tabakversand.de hope this has been of some help
If you might enjoy a nice light aroma, I would HIGHLY recommend Rumcake from Pipeworks & Wilke. I don’t smoke much but I always take that blend to smoke when visiting my sister as she really enjoys the aroma.
As a 50 year smoker - 2 packs of cig’s a day until last year and a couple of pipes per day, I can offer my experience.
I always enjoyed a pipe when I was done with work and could relax but simply couldn’t be bothered carrying everything around with me. After retirement and with COPD I needed to at least cut way back on cigarettes if not quit altogether and I thought that just switching to smoking more pipe bowls would do the trick. It didn’t.
What I found was that as soon as I’d finish a pipe or put the pipe down halfway through a bowl, I’d reach for a cigarette. Not the result I wanted.
I decided to try really heavy nicotine content pipe tobacco - GH Dark Flake, Dunhill Nightcap and Royal Yacht and found that the high nicotine content of those blends did in fact decrease my urgent need to grab for a cigarette. Still it was not easy as the habit is so ingrained.
I have managed to keep to about 6 cigarettes a day, which is a big step from two packs but after a couple of years of working on it, I still can’t seem to take that final step to pipes only.
I don’t know if the ‘high nico’ solution is a good one for you but you might want to try it. Good luck.
I’ve never smoked cigarettes, but I do enjoy the ocassionail cigar to compliment a good beer at the end of the day. If you want a mild tobacco with out much tounge bite I would recomend Princ Albert. One of the posters above mentionted that you might be from England, so I don’t know if the good prince is avaible on the other side of the pond as I live in the states. I have a buddy who is trying the same thing, and I gave him some of my Prince Albert and he really likes it. Good Luck and I hope you find a tobacco that you enjoy.
Hi Christina,
If you are from the UK, then some of the above are not available unfortunately!
I would suggest you try Clan as a gentle easily smoked aromatic to start with…then possibly Benson & Hedges Mellow Virginia..comes in a brown pouch. Clan and B&H are available just about everywhere. Get used to them and then experiment with some tinned varieties by reading the reviews here. You’re bound to make some mistakes; we all do, but you’ll probably find more you like than dislike!
First of all, I would strongly recommend you to simply quit smoking. Simple means: no smoking (not too easy though).
I managed to quit smoking for 3 years, when a friend gifted me with a pipe. One month after I was a nicotine junkie again. I found Stanwell Classic (plump aroma), a blend by Orlik: really mild for both smoker and the room. Most probably it would not be available where you are, but I could guess that any Orlik aromatic would work well.
The trick with me is that my pipe have filter, so I do inhale couple of my puffs. One pipe, every day or two, during a mild abstination. The world starts glittering for about a minute, mind and body decompose… I love to be a smoker again.
