Pleasing Aromas?

Jason writes in to ask:
I have a non-smoker wife who strongly dislikes the room aroma of most smokes, so I wondered if anyone had any suggestions for tobaccos which are generally enjoyed by non-smoking bystanders. I prefer to avoid the OTC blends because of the artificial additives, so what are your recommendations on all-natural bystander-pleasers?
From where I am standing, it looks to me like the best option is to not smoke around her, but I could be wrong. Fellas, give the man some blends to try out on his lovely bride’s nostrils.

I would Recommend Peterson’s Sweet Killarney. It has a nice aroma, but is still a good tasting tobacco. Oh, and Blue Note isn’t bad either.
Most non smoking women hate any type of tobacco smoke, however, any aromatic type might be tolerated, I say might. Light puffing with a minimum of smoke is definitely a must.
Middleton’s Cherry Blend, Borkum Riff Whiskey (ugh!), anything with Black Cavendish, and Argosy are worth a try with the ladies. I have been a garage and porch smoker for 25 years. Good Luck!
My wife has chosen to ignore the Virginia perique blends. Aromatics tend to raise attention so I find solace in GLP Stratford, H&H Virginia blends, S Gawith St James Flake. They don’t have flowery or powerful aromas so I get no comment. When I ask she says they are not noticeable.
Good luck.
Steve
Hey Bro,
I would highly recomend any of the Boswells blends. In particular Christmas Cookie. I haven’t come across a blend that can please both the Ol Lady and the smoker better then this Blend.
The smoke is rich and very pleasing. If you are outside with her then
Boswells best Burley for more Umph on your end of the pipe. Still a very pleasant aroma.
Cornell & Diel’s “Apricots % Cream” has an outstanding aroma. It has been called the “marraige saver”… it is, as the name suggests, an aromatic smoke.
Also, I recently smoked some MacBaren “Club Blend” and my wife commented that it smelled like roasting marshmallows. Club is a pretty natural Virginia with a touch of Cavendish. I found out, through the help of my fellow reviewers, that Club needs to dry out a bit, and it must be smoked slowly. A really nice tobacco that is well worth trying.
Try McBaren´s Vanilla Cream Flakes. Dry the flakes a little and use MB’s folding technique (it’s in their web site). My better half (and all of her tobacco-hating family)loves it.
I smoke Frog Morton frequently and have had nothing but favorable comments. Of course, anyone of either gender who comes to my home or invites me to theirs knows I am a smoker so that may not be a fair comparison.
The best bet of all is to take it out side sir-FC.
Stoneheaven “Esoterica” - without any complaints! Ever!
My wife is an anti so i have to take it outside or in the garage. It is turning to winter over here and the other day it was raining like crazy when i decided to sit in the garage for a smoke.
Lo and behold she said it would be OK for me to smoke inside as long as its the yellow can. HOTW
It turns out she does not mind HOTW at all and i can have a maximum of 2 bowls inside a day, not bad.
I have been smoking Briar Fox with no ill effects either. I find that these 2 blends do not leave a smell the next morning
Hope it helps
I’d go with Pirate Kake, or maybe a nice cigar leaf blend like Strike Force from pipesandcigars.com. Smoke that for a while, then have some Cherry Cavendish by Carol at Pipeworks.
Devil’s Holiday, Milonga, or Blue Note (all by Dan’s Tobacco) have very sweet room notes and tend to be crowd pleasers.
Or if if you use the advance search feature you can search based on room note, which will give you more than ample choices.
I hear ya! My girlfriend is a health freak and does not like second hand smoke or the smell of it. I smoked Blue Note around her and she actually loved the smell! I know a couple of other people recommended it to you on here and couldn’t agree more!
Try the Peretti Burley Blends: 100, 101, Belmont, BPC. Outstanding for Ladies and (yourself). Good smoke.
Have you thought of trading the wife in? If she is nearing 40 it’s time to trade her in for 2 20’s…
LOL, but seriously dropping some comments like “Really, You don’t like it? My girlfriend loves the smell…” might help. Either she will be more tolerant or you will be out on the couch where you can smoke to your hearts content. Heh heh!
Is there anyone else out there that flavors uncased tobacco besides me? If so, let me hear from you. That is how I solved the problem with my wife! I get her involved and she sniffs the flavors and chooses what she wants me to spray on uncased tobacco that I buy (according to my specifications from Cornell & Diehl). As we all know, it is excellent tobacco. I also have establish an account with a major international flavor house. No small feat! But I now can buy flavors by the kilo without having to order ten kilos at a time. Kilo’s do cost about $70 USD including UPS. I also have found some “common” extracts (used in cooking) that work well. So, if someone out there has an interest in flavoring their own uncased tobacco blends, send me an email and I will be happy to share information, tips and tricks!
One thing I’ve done is sit near the fireplace and aim the smoke up the chimney! Convenient to throw the matches in there, too. I concur with the opinion that most aromatics will please the smoke-sensitive types. I’m told Captain Black white never fails to please scent-wise. Experiment with a few and see what you (and she) like.
I would HIGHLY recommend Rumcake from Pipeworks & Wilke. I don’t smoke much but I always take that blend to smoke when visiting my sister as she really enjoys the aroma.
I second the recommendation for C&D Apricots & Cream and also Espresso (same tobac, different casing). Tastes mostly like tobacco, smells nice, easy to pack and smoke.
