Dunhill Light Flake

Hmm, it seems to be a day for missing old blends. Nigel writes:
I find to my dismay that this tobacco (formerly known as DUNHILL LIGHT FLAKE) has been discontinued. Can you recommend/suggest a similar tobacco that I can try?
What can you recommend to him?

I liked Dunhill’s Light Flake too.
Germain’s Medium Flake is a similar bright flake (with some red Virginia) but less scenty (more citrus). Dunhill’s had a touch of apricot? Germain’s is harder to peal though.
Butera’s straight Golden Cake is a better flake cut but not as sweet.
Former’s Cross Grain Flake is a good, sweet bright flake (touch of perique).
Reiner and Solani’s 633 is a great bright flake (touch of perique for coolness), sweeter than their Long Golden Flake even (touch of white burley and perique).
McClelland’s 27 has stood the test of time but I don’t beleive it is scented at all or at least not like Dunhill’s (has some orange Viriginia in it too.) More tangy.
Orlik and C&D have more but it boils down to a sweet bright flake that doesn’t burn hot. I’d pick Germain and Solani for a start in comparisons.
just because it’s not produced anymore doesn’t mean it’s not available. i recently purchased some in a shop and have seen it in others. it is also available on line.

Many thanks-my on-line supplier has run out! Can you give me the website adresses of other on-line suppliers who may be able to help?

Dunhill Flake is a very nice VA flake balanced in the middle of the spectrum. I would suggest the similarly positioned McClelland Virginia Woods.
I agree with vic…you should have enough time to stock up on the LF before its no longer available.
but after it is gone, I would say go with Samuel Gawith’s Full Virginia Flake.
Agree with the other comments stock up before it runs out and also try some CD star of the east flake-FC.
try pipesandcigars.com or cupojoes.com. they seem to have it. i have seen it in two local (md and dc) stores within the past two weeks. i even purchased some. around $9.00. if you can’t get it thru the above and are interested in it let me know how many tins and i will try to pick it up locally and ship it to you. vic
Very similar to DLF is Orlik’s Golden Slices. Also consider Mac Baren’s Virginia Flake, Bjarne’s Flake DeLuxe (though that might be history now Bjarne Nielsens’ passing), Gawith & Hoggarth’s Best Brown Flake #2 (scented) and Samuel Gawith’s Medium Virginia Flake. Orlik’s is the closest I’ve found to Dunhill’s flake.
The rest of my suggestions are also out of production. )-:
I agree with much of piprline, Mac Barens Virginia Flake is close, but has a distinct lemon flavour in the background (to me anyway), Orliks Golden Slices is also very close but a little bit too light, what I did was to mix the two together 50/50 and I had something of the same strength with a little flavour. Having said that, you could try Sam Gawiths Best Brown Flake, also very mild and smooth, I find I’m elevating to that choice myself as DHL was one of my favourites. Finally, I have been told that Murray’s Mixture is supposed to be about the same, but this I have’nt tried. Good Luck.
Dunhill has also cancelled Nightcap. I don’t know if I can live without it.
i don’t believe that dunhill has cancelled nightcap. rather that dunhill decided to exit the tobacco business and sold the names to orlik. orlike has cancelled it if it is indeed canceled. orlik has done a poor job of recreating the blends that murray put up. if nightcap is gone it is because of orlick. these murray blends are still out there. i see them in shops when i travel. the orlik blends have a big white label that covers the entire tin bottom and it doesn’t say “made in the uk in association with dunhill——”. they are out there. you just have to dig and look.
Looks like smokingpipes.com has it in stock….No, I don’t work for them, just trying to help..

I suggest that Dunhill Light Flake and Iwan Ries Virginia Flake are virtually indistinguishable. They are both scented in the Gawith “Lake District” manner. If you like that sort of thing you might also want to try Mixture 79 or HoW’s Field & Stream, if you can find any left out there. And, of course, both Sam Gawith and Gawith & Hoggarth seemed to specialize in “scented” (i.e.,floral top-dressed) tobaccos.
If you check the website 4noggins.com you will see that Richard still has all the varieties for sale.
Iwan Ries Virginia Flake is the ticket. And the nice surprise is its cost is a fraction of Dunhill Light Flake.
