How Many Reviews Do You Read?

Doug was wondering:

How many people read EVERY review? Or how do they decide which reviews to read? Do some read only reviews made by certain reviewers whose tastes match their own?

For example, I read every review on a “list” of my favorite tobaccos, plus the reviews of blends that either catch my eye or ones that have come to my attention from elsewhere (ads or mailing-list discussions). I’ll especially read the reviews of blends when I’m searching for something specifically. Since I only smoke aromatics very rarely, I only read reviews of aromatics very rarely.

Just wondering what other people do…

Good question. I know I don’t read every single review (though I did for the first few years of the site’s existence) that comes through. How voracious is your review reading?

I read every review posted each day, in the morning (Austria time) with my coffee and FVF or Ennerdale, usually. Unless that is, there was a happy spammer on the night before, posting 37.9 reviews, all of which are one liners. I’ll skip most of those and go for the meat.

Of course, if there are ten new reviews, I’ll read those for my favorite blend/blender first, then I’ll look at who wrote new reviews and go from there. Unless it’s a one star review for, say, a GLPease, for Penzance, or something else unheard of, then I’ll hit that first. (One star reviews are fun, though I hardly ever write them.)

As for All of the reviews on a given tobacco, well, I’ve read all the reviews of my favorite tobaccos more than a few times. And I read all the reviews for a smoke I might order for the first time.

I think have read all the reviews for all of the 4 star and 1 star tobaccos. The rest is hit and miss. And I’ll bet No one has read all of Pipestud’s reviews. (not even he himself. I’ve heard he has a ghost writer :-)

-loose

one question, though…what’s with the Unknown reviewer? Just who is that bag-faced man?

I actually read as many as I can as I usually have one smoking session per day dedicated to new blends only. Once the tin is finished, I will decide wheather or not to keep it and move on to the next.

It is while I am busy with the tin that I read reviews on what to buy next.

I also visit the site daily to see which new reviews are submitted.

ps. Does anyone know Eulenberg??? I find his reviews very entertaining

When looking for a new tobacco, I read all of the reviews for it before deciding, unless it us something like Penzance with 50million entries. I rarely just browse. I am usually looking for information on a specific tobacco.

I find ALL the reviews helpful, including the negative ones, and I have occaisionally chosen to see all reviews by a particular reviewer whose tastes seem aligned with mine to get a list of possible new smokes.

Wish I had more time to spend on the site. And no, I have not yet submitted any reviews of my own, but will be soon- I wanted to spend enough time getting a feel for what is useful to others before starting to write my own.

Similar to Christopher, I like to read most of the new reviews each day. Then for tobaccos I like and 4 star tobaccos I’ve read almost all of the reviews. I also browse online stores and look for interesting blends then check the reviews here before I make any decisions.

I scan the list of new reviews and read all of the entries for blends that I have experience with. When I’m thinking about a purchase I also read the reviews for blends on my wishlist.

I wish that there was a way to look at a list of blends that seem to be popular among the same people, sort of like Amazon’s “people who bought this book also bought . . .”

I also wish that reviewers could have a list of general preferences in their profiles so that we could sort reviews by them. For example, I’d like to see what burleys are popular with people who like burleys so that I don’t have to scroll past lots of “reviews” that say “I hate burleys and this is no exeption.”

I only read the reviews for tobaccos that sound interesting to me.

Before I go over the reviews, I start with a particular brand first. Then I look at the blends that have the highest ratings. Then I read the ones with the higher reviews, 3 stars or more. If the reviews tend to have 3 stars or higher, and if its a brand and blend I intend to try, I will purchase it with no hesitation. That is the method to my madness!!

usually i will find tobaccos that are highly rated, the go to the internet and try to find them, and buy a can or bag…i will then sometimes buy tobaccos that sound good to me, but may have low ratings.

i like when shops offer sample ounces, then i can try 5 or more blends for less than 20 dollars

I generally read all of the reviews for whatever I’m smoking. I then tend to surf, exploring either a brand, or a reviewer (or both). If a review on a particular blend stands out, I’ll seek out that blend and pick up a tin or a few ounces to sample.

I think that surfing this site is a bit like surfing the web….you start somewhere and there’s a review with a comment that this blend is quite like so-and-so, sp you go read them….and there’s comments there that lead you further into new territory. I like this…it makes for an interesting journey!
I just wish we had a Forum here to discuss stuff, ask questions directly, as it were, to other members. I think that would be amazingly good.

I am new to the site, and am a fairly novice pipe smoker (not green, but novice).

I generally only read the reviews of blends I am interested in. If that blend has around 2 dozen or less reviews, I will pretty much read them all. If there are lots of reviews, I will read the last several, and then maybe look for a couple people who loved the blend, and a couple who hated the blend, to see what they say. I will also occasionally check blends that have either a very high, or very low average ranking, to see what made them so.

This site has been helpful to me. Thanks.

I read all of the reviews. I will susally start with blends I’m interested in, as well as reviews by reviewers whom I enjoy. I then will come back later in the day and finish the rest.

I read the new reviews regularly, almost daily. I often search the reviews when I am looking to try something new or if I have recently heard of a tobacco I am not familiar with.

I read all the reviews, for the most part. I have been enlightened, and found many blends that I may not have even thought of trying by checking out each review. Sometimes tobaccos that I had yet to hear of are reviewed and, even if it receives a poor rating, I check out prior reviews of those blends…because you never know when a certain description inspires you to venture out from your tried-and-trues!

I read the reviews of the avaiable tobaccos in my area also tobaccos i plan to buy and the reviews of people here either because our tastes seem to match or because they write nice. For example I respect a lot and read tantric and pipestud

I suppose I am fortunate enough to be aware of many tobaccos and styles/blends. I do some research pertaining to tobaccos that I can then acquire online.

I find the most helpful part is when reviewers comment on other similar brands/blends. This has led me to some tobacco that I would have not even known of. Search for it online and often order a small tin.

This site has had a tremendous impact on my enjoyment of pipe smoking. In 44 years of pipe smoking I have only recently branched out into the better blends, either because they weren’t available to me or I was ignorant of their virtues and qualities. I read all the reviews of a blend that I think I’d be interested in, no matter how numerous, and I get a pretty good idea of whether or not I’ll like it.

I read almost every review before I smoke a blend looking for consistent view points.I pay more attention if the reviewer is underlined. I do ignore most that vary greatly from the pack

I love this website! I couldn’t imagine the hobby I love so much without it. An invaluable tool when looking to explore new tobaccos as well as the tried and trues.

I recently (2 years ago) began smoking my pipes again after about a ten year break. One of the reasons that I stopped when I did was the fact that there were so few resources out there that I felt confident enough to use. I mean, where else are you going to sit down with a cup of coffee, a bowl of tobacco and a few thousand of your pipe friends? That kind of feedback is not available from any one expert. As we all know, tastes differ and the more info you have before the purchase the better.

I just want to say that I read every review for every blend that I am interested in and a few for blends that I would never smoke. They are all full of information and are often very entertaining all on their own.

Thank you to the people of tobacco reviews and all the posters that are so darn reliable. You have given me renewed passion for a hobby I thought I would never enjoy again.

I read all of the reviews from the major brands that are available to the majority of consumers. There seems no reason to read about a tobacco that you’ll never find or is discontinued. However, with shopping online, the field is greatly expanded from just a few years ago.
I am particularly interested in those reviews that also give us a peak at people’s lives. I mean the ones that put the tobacco in context of living. Tobacco is not smoked in a laboratory, but it usually smoked as part of life. And, as such, it is nice to hear about how a brand fits into that person’s lifestyle.

I read reviews with my morning bowl or two. When I read about a blend I am interested in, I also pick up on the blends that its reminds someone of. So, I just bounce around in this fashion and have discovered many good smokes this way. Also, if someone seems to have a talent for writing I read their reviews for entertainment.

The reviews are my go-to source for information on whats new and whats tried and true. Being a pipe smoker for over 40 years you would think my knowledge of blends to be nearing the expert level. Not So! Tastes vary from one smoker to the next and I find the reviews a wharehouse of information that guides me in my choice of blends that I have yet to try. When it comes to smoking a pipe I have always had an open mind as far as trying new blends but first I read all the reviews I can just to get a feel for each one. Besides, where else can so many lovers of the briar and blend find such wonderful thoughts and critique on the special weed we place in our bowels each day!!

Thanks for the replies!!!

I should have thought of this in the first place,
but I agree very much with Frank Taylor above
when he said, “I find the most helpful part is
when reviewers comment on other similar
brands/blends. This has led me to some tobacco
that I would have not even known of.”

This is exactly how I discovered Penzance,
Larry’s Blend, Old Ironsides, Anniversary
Kake, Krumble Kake, Special Latakia Flake,
and many others that I now would NOT like
to live without. Well said, Frank!

Jon, maybe somewhere in your instructions to
reviewers, you might insert a statement to the
effect that in the body of the review, it is
very helpful to other smokers if the blend
in question is compared to other blends by
name.

This site is great! As I noted in my bio, I came back to pipe smoking after a 20 year hiatus.
So the reviews have helped me chhoose the blends I want to try. My Practice is to read most of the reviews daily. Now I do not get into reading
the one and two stars that often; unless it a blend I have tried or a blend I have tried and liked. Then I read the review to see if there was
any merit to the rating. There are several reviewers I read because they simply make the review interesting.
