I am about to travel to South Africa. Anyone got any good suggestions for brands/blends to sample while I am there? I think that Balkan Sobranie might be still available there…but I am keen to try some local blends if I can find them!

Are there any folks out there from SA or who know something about SA that can help out?

Hey, Tony!

I’ve got a friend in South Africa that has sent me some Balkan Sobranie. Along with that, he sent me a wonderful balkan mixture named (simply enough) “Balkan”. It’s from a store that is relatively famous in South Africa: Sturk’s. Sturk’s has been around for over a hundred years, if I understand my friend correctly, and Balkan is blended there locally, so it’s not available anywhere else.

It’s a heavy balkan, with a good dose of yenidje tobacco. It’s one of only two or three tobaccos that I’ve tried that can even come close to Balkan Sobranie. As far as Sturk’s Balkan goes, I won’t settle until I’ve got a few pounds of that bulk in my “cellar”. (I must admit some shame that I’ve yet to get my notes organized so I can post a proper review . . .)

Sturk’s is a “must-visit”.
