More Than Just Pipe Tobacco?

From time to time I get requests to add items to the database that are not strictly pipe tobaccos - chewing tobacco, handrolling tobacco, even snuff occasionally. The person who requests them usually has a justification for the addition request along the lines of “I smoke this in my pipe sometimes so it should be included.”
My stance has generally been to not add these types of products, and concentrate the database on those blends sold as pipe tobacco. However, I think it should be up to the Tobacco Reviews community at large to determine what gets listed in the database and what doesn’t, so I need to know, what are your feelings on listing these types of products.
Leave a comment for or against including them and let me know what you think. If the comments all run in one direction or another, we will go that way. If no consensus is reached, I’ll put up a poll and let a vote decide. Of course, if the vote is a tie, I will cast my vote as well.

My vote goes for pipe tobacco for pipes, period. If someone wants to slip into a review a story of their moment of wild desparation forcing a smoking solution, fine. Like the time I cut off some tobacco chewin rube’s ear to secure his plug, to get that monkey off my back. Worse yet, all of the “herb” smoker’s contributions. Now that thought is mind numbing. Your effort in this website is wonderful and respected. By keeping the format simple will insure its life. No, is my vote. Respectfully submitted.
I say strictly pipe tobaccos. I think it would be disastrous for the new pipe smoker to get confused and try to smoke a juicy plug of chewing tobacco.
What you do, you do well. No sense in trying to be all things to all people. As a place to learn about different blends of pipe tobacco and compare what you like with ideas for what to try, there is no other source that can do the job as well.
I vote to stick to pipe tobacco. Simple, straight forward, easy to use.
My vote - Pipe Tobacco - the way you do it now. I’m a snuff user too etc… but the site functions exceedingly well as a Pipe Tobacco community. I would hate to see it diluted. Cheers, VC
I vote pipe tobaccos only… to do otherwise would be a slippery slope of the worst sort.
There are cigar, snuff, snus, etc, websites that have their own review boards. We have tobaccoreviews.com for pipe tobacco reviews, and because the product is not diluted, it is the best such site on the planet. I say we keep our little corner of the world to ourselves. Thanks, Steve Fallon (Pipestud)
I first thought to include all, however having read the above reviewers, I agree that the core website should feature only pipe tobacco. However, if the esteemed webmaster would be able to configure the site to have an “other” sub-page for the site for the other forms of tobacco enjoyment, I believe it would positively impact the tobacco enthusiast community. I, for one, have come to enjoy traditional smokeless tobacco in addition to the pipe.
WHAT NEXT, A REVIEW OF MJ, KEEP IT FOR PIPE TOBACCO ONLY—THANKS
I vote for only pipe tobaccos.
My vote is for pipe tobaccos only. I have never done a review, but I come here all the time to check out what people have to say about pipe tobaccos. Please don’t dilute the site!
I think you do a superb job with the pipe tobacco review site. I recently (Feb) returned to the briar and Tobacco Reviews has been invaluable in my enjoyment of pipe smoking. If it were me, I’d leave it as is.
Thanks

Traditional pipe tobacco only. I enjoy chew, dip, and nasal snuff, but the lion’s share of these other products are not made to be stoked in a pipe. Manufacturers are experienced professionals and they produce each product with certain uses in mind. I chewed Day’s O’ Work for years, but I couldn’t imagine putting that syrupy burley plug in a pipe. It just wasn’t made for that. Would a chewers’ website have listings exploring the pleasures of chomping on a Macanudo? Unless the packaging indicates something like “For Smoking or Chewing” or “For Pipes or Cigarettes” , it has no place on this site, in my opinion.
Honestly, I would like to see Nasal Snuff reviews, due to the fact that there are not many quality Snuff reviews sites to be found.
But I can say that TobaccoReviews.com is great the way it is, and would never object to keeping it that way.
Stick with pipe tobacco only. There’s enough sites for the other stuff. This place rocks as is. Thanks!
I agree with Pipestud, there are venues available for all of the other products in quetion, this venue should be kept dedicated to pipe tobacco.
Sincerely,
Matt Williams
I agree with the others.Keep it strictly to pipe tobacco. If they want to know about chews, snuff or any thing else they can go to google and look for that web site.Pipe smokers are a special group of people,we stick strictly to one type of tobacco.
does anybody know a good nasal snuff review site?
I cant find any.
Your work on this site is highly valuable and greatly appreciated. Please keep the site limited to pipe tobacco. If people want snuff reviews or any other reviews, they should start a separate website dedicated to that purpose.
Thanks
Fred

Eonwe, Try snuffhouse.org. I don’t bother with this site since I only use F&T’s High Dry Toast. Dean Swift’s “Deans Own” is very good also but is hard to find fresh in this country.
Though I agree that the website should probably stick to pipe tobacco only, but the domain name itself is tobaccoreviews and not pipetobaccoreviews - why not have the same engine run on a subdomain for other types of tobacco, something like snuff.tobaccorviews.com and cigs.tobaccoreviews.com etc? It should be trivial to have multiple installations of the same engine, and the website has the potential to turn into THE tobaccoreview portal, whatever the type.
By the way, congratulations on starting this blog. I was about to send a suggestion to tobaccoreviews.com that its the perfect time to enter the Web2.0 era, but I guess you were already working on it.
I quit smoking cigarettes (20 cigs a day x 12 years ) this July, and switched to pipe smoking (3 or so bowls a day) - the website has been invaluable in pre-filtering (no pun intended) the 25-30 brands available here (Lahore, Pakistan).
I have smoked around 12 different tobaccos so far, and even the worst of them are better than cigarettes.
I vote for pipe tobacco only. Agree with all the positive comments already expressed to leave the site to review pipe tobacco only. Great site.
I would love to see the site opened up to include things like recipes, car repair, and a vacation planner. Thanks!
Keep it simple, pipe tobacco hands down.
Pipe tobacco only.

This site is a wealth of information that I have refered to for years. It is about pipe tobacco and should be left as pipe tobacco only. We are all thankful to have such a great site to refer to. Lets keep it as it is.
I agree with the majority of the the reviewers on this one, I think that allowing all sorts of things to be reviewed here will not be good for pipers, like me, that depend on this site for our new tobacco purchases. Imagine opening a package that you have been drooling over for weeks to contain a nasty surprise, the site is almost perfect as it is. Thank you
I enjoy the mild and tempered civility available here. I think adding other smokey voices would detract. Please keep it to pipe tobacco, because it is more like reviewing flavourful wine than just downing a cold beer.
pipe tobacco only!!!!!!!!!!!
Another vote for pipe tobacco only.
Pipe tobacco only!
Pipe tobacco only, is my two cents on the matter.
PIPE TOBACCO ONLY!!!!!! Why mess with something that is not broken??
Please: Pipe tobacco only. You are providing an amazing — invaluable — resource here, and I would be sorry to see it watered down in any way; the inclusion of tobacco products that are not specifically for pipe smoking would very much constitute “watering down,” in my opinion. (After all, there are folks who crumble up cigars and put them in their pipes. . . but would anyone welcome the addition of cigar reviews on this site?)
Thanks for this wonderful resource. And thanks for asking for users’ opinions on the matter.
Okay folks, I hear you loud and clear. Tobacco Reviews will stay pipe tobacco only. Thanks for speaking up and letting me know which way the site should go on this issue. My job is a whole lot easier when I know I’m doing what everyone wants for the site instead of just indulging my own prejudices one way or the other.
The unique quality of this site should not be diluted with reviews of snuff, chewing tobacco, bubble gum or whatever people choose to put in their mouths for enjoyment. It’s been about pipe tobacco and it should stay about pipe tobacco.
I vote for pipe tobacco ONLY!!! Apenas tabaco para cachimbo!!! This site is the best one because of it’s exclusivity. Happy new year to all of you!
ALthough I am being heavily outvoted I think this site should be both Pipe and ‘Roll yer Own’ cigarette tobacco. Cigars, factory made cigarettes, snuff and that very american and god awful, chewing tobacco should be left off. The title of the site is, afterall, ‘Tobacco reviews’. In this country Tobacco is either rolled up for a cigarette or stuffed in your pipe for smoking. By sticking to pipe tobacco only you cater to the whole world for sure, but you lose some very fine ‘Rollie’ tobacco that may be almost as good in a pipe when properly packed.
I joined this site so that I could review my favourite Rolling Tobacco. Pipe tobacco was a very secondary choice to that.
Alternatively include all tobaccos and specify just what it is used for ie Sticking in your mouth/up your nose or sticking in your pipe etc. This will save some idiot from trying to stuff chewing tobacco in their pipe perhaps.
I vote for Pipe Tobacco only. I like some others have never gave a review, but I find this site very informative, a sort of “Brotherhood of Pipe Smoker’s” and in this day and age that is a very refreshing thing.
You have spoken, loudly and clearly. Without question, the overwhelming idea is to keep Tobacco Reviews pipe tobacco only. I agree, and will keep it that way.
As an adjunct, if you know of any non-pipe-tobacco products listed on the site, please leave a comment and I will remove them.
and I have to advice to you really good website about pipes: water-bongs-glass-pipes.com
Tobacco reviews is perfect the way it is. There are plenty of other websites for the guys who wanna discuss other products.
Thanks for the opportunity to read lots of fellas reviews about the blends they smoke.
Aaron
Glad you’re gonna leave it the way it is!
Aaron
Love this site, to use as a comparison for PIPE smokers who have the same taste/view of tobaccos as I do. Please keep the format for pipe tobacco only. Respectfully,
Andy
Excuse me for not reading all of the previous posts, and realizing that you are going to keep the format the same. Although I do not post reviews, I visit your site frequently and really enjoy the ratings, which brings me back to try blends that I haven’t smoked in many years.
Thanks again,
Andy
Yeah it’s got to be kept to pipe tobacco only. What would be nice would be sub sections where people could review pipe’s as well as various items such as pipe cleaners, lighters, reamers, tools - anything to do with this wonderful hobby.
Please stick to your current content. I guess, in hindsight, naming it pipetobaccoreviews would have squelched this notion from the git-go but, oh well.
