Help Wanted: Brindley’s Mixture

Posted on December 19, 2007

I get a lot of questions here in the old Tobacco Reviews mailbag, and since I am not all-knowing, most of them are questions I can’t answer. However, I bet someone out there in tobacco-land knows the answer to almost all of them, so I will begin posting those questions here, in the hopes that someone who can answer it will leave a comment and help a fellow pipe smoker out.

Our first question for Help Wanted comes from Roger, who writes:

I have been a long time smoker of Brindley`s Mixture from Swisher. Since it is no longer available I am in distress. Have you any suggestions as to another source or another product very similar?

What say you, fellow smokers? What should Roger give a try in hopes of replacing his beloved Brindley’s Mixture? Or maybe somebody knows where some more Brindley’s might be hiding, waiting for Roger to swoop in and push the sad day when he can no longer get it a little farther into the future…

MarCigars indicated that they may have pouches and have compared C%D Crooner to it.

All the sources listed in the responses I have already contacted and they are out of stock. Can anyone suggest another product with similar formulation?

Roger,

May I suggest “Capitol Stairs” by Russ Oulette? Here is a link to where you can find it: http://pipesandcigars.com/ruouhobl.html

Here is the official description of the blend: “it is a truly unique combination of mild, nutty Burley, sweet Virginia and Perique, and finished off with Deertongue (a vanilla-like herb). The result is a non-aromatic blend (no added flavorings) that has an almost French toast-like aroma, and a lightly sweet, smooth smoke that you can enjoy all day.”

Here is a link to the reviews on it: http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=C&TID=2442

You could also contact Russ directly at the shop and he may be able to custom blend it for you. Also, the good folks at Milan Tobacconists may also be able to make up a special blend if they don’t already have one like it in stock: http://www.milantobacco.com/milanpipetobacco.htm

I hope this helps you in your quest! Best of luck!

Hello,
Mars and Knoxville and Pipes & cigars has it. Trinidad from C&D is a good blend with deer tongue. Plenty of Deer Tongue in this blend.
I prefer to use Prince Albert and the deer Tongue myself. I then let it sit and marry for about a month. You can find Deer Tongue online. I think C&D. A little goes a ong way. I add about three pinches to a pouch.

Hi all
There’s a tin of Brindley’s up for auction with Ebay at the moment. I believe it’s a 1990’s sealed example so it might be worth chasing up. Go for it Roger! The auction ends on the 1oth February.

I have purchased it recently at Ted’s Tobacco in Lincoln Ne. It is very similar to the old Faber & Coe mixture before it was bought out by some outfit that ruined it then folded. I used to buy it by the tin. Beats anything yet on the market that I know of although I am not an expert.

Roger,
Have you found any Brindley’s yet. I am about to run out of the last jar that I bought some time ago at Ziggies, and am looking for it also.
Norm
